Padmaka, also called Prunus Cerasoides, is a medicinal herb of high therapeutic importance. It has been commonly used in Ayurveda for the treatment of several diseases. It is primarily used to treat back pain and skin diseases like eczema and wounds. It also helps in the management of arthritis, and neck pain.

Indications, uses, and benefits

The health benefits of this medicine are as follows:

Back pain

Padmaka possesses astringent and analgesic properties. The juice of its bark can be consumed orally or applied topically to obtain relief from backache. The analgesic action produced by this herb helps the patients to get rid of the pain. Padmaka also produces a soothing effect and relieves the spasm of the muscles in the back.

Padmaka is commonly used to treat lumbar spondylosis. This condition occurs due to the age-related degeneration of the lumbar vertebra. It is a chronic progressive disorder that causes pain in the back along with restricted mobility. It affects the routine life of the patients by reducing the range of motion and discomfort.

Padmaka can help to relieve the pain and discomfort caused due to this condition. It produces an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant action, which help to prevent damage to the lumbar vertebrae.

The antioxidant activity of this herb was investigated in a study. The antioxidant action was evaluated based on the hydroxyl scavenging activities it produced. The other parameters used for determining the same were the total phenolic contents and the reducing power. The results of this study showed that Padmaka possesses strong antioxidant property.

This antioxidant activity helps to slow down the progression of lumbar spondylosis. This herb also increases the range of motion in the back and allows the patients to perform the daily activities with better ease.

It reduces stiffness of the back muscles. The use of this herb is also beneficial for relieving the back pain that has occurred due to overexertion. It can reduce backache and muscle stiffness occurring after long journeys.

Skin diseases

The use of Padmaka can help to relieve the symptoms of several skin diseases such as eczema, wounds, and infections. The beneficial effect of this herb in the management of skin diseases has been proved during research.

The study was focused on identifying the trace elements in the extract of this herb by following the proton-induced X-ray emission method. It is considered a powerful technique having a high sensitivity and multi-elemental trace analysis capability.

The results of this study revealed the presence of six trace elements, including Iron, Zinc, and Copper, in varying concentrations in the extract of Padmaka. These elements can play a role in the management of skin diseases. This research supported the therapeutic utility of Padmaka for curing eczema and wounds.

It helps to relieve the symptoms of eczema such as itching, oozing of moisture, and dryness of the skin. It can also improve the healing of wounds. The antibacterial action produced by this herb can be beneficial in the management of skin infections.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia

Padmaka can be used in the management of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This herb supports the prostate health. It also prevents the inflammation, and enlargement of this gland thus reducing the risk of benign enlargement of the prostate.

It also provides relief from the symptoms of this disease such as interrupted flow of urine, a weak stream of urine, difficulty in initiating the flow of urine, painful urination, and incomplete emptying of the bladder.

The usefulness of Padmaka and the other herbs of the Prunus species in the management of prostate disorders were evaluated during research.

The study involved the assessment of the activity of the herbs belonging to the Prunus species for treating testosterone-induced BPH. During the study, Wistar rats were administered 2 mg per kg body weight of the extract of the herbs every day, subcutaneously, for 21 days.

The improvement in their symptoms was evaluated based on the parameters such as body weight, immunohistochemistry (PCNA), histopathological examination, and a biochemical estimation of the prostate gland.

The results were supported by the evaluation of the prostatic index, creatinine levels, testicular index, and testosterone levels. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action of the herb were also evaluated. The research also included the chemical profiling using the markers such as β-sitosterol, ursolic acid, and docosyl ferulate.

The results indicated that the herbs of Prunus species including Padmaka exhibited significant amelioration in the symptoms of testosterone-induced BPH. The herb also showed to possess remarkable antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. This signifies the preventive role played by Padmaka in interfering with the possible factors involved in the development of BPH.

Neck pain

Padmaka can be used to treat the common causes of neck pain such as cervical spondylosis. This condition affects the movements of the neck. It can also cause stiffness of the neck muscles thus restricting the neck movements.

The use of Padmaka can provide relief from these symptoms. It also produces a soothing effect and reduces the pain and discomfort. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects produced by this herb help to prevent the progress of cervical spondylosis.

Muscle pain

The use of Padmaka can provide relief from muscle pain and stiffness. It reduces the body pain and discomfort caused due to overexertion. It also produces a soothing effect and relieves the muscle spasms.

This medicine produces an anti-inflammatory action, which helps to provide relief from the pain and swelling in the muscles. It can also be used to treat the stiffness of the muscles caused due to a faulty posture.

Strains and sprains

Padmaka can be used to treat strains and sprains. The common parts of the body prone to strains and sprains include the ankles, back, and the neck. It may occur due to the sudden pull or tear of a ligament. The symptoms of strain and sprain include pain along with mild to moderate swelling and inability to move the part. Padmaka can help to relieve these symptoms and enable to patient to move about freely.
