Punarnavasavam is an effective Ayurvedic medicine useful in the management of stomach complaints. It provides relief from the symptoms of gastritis, and peptic ulcers. It contains about 5 to 10% of self-generated alcohol, which along with the water present in it, serves as a media and delivers alcohol and water soluble herbal components to the body.

It is a liquid medicine prepared using a method that involves fermentation of its herbal ingredients. This helps to increase the shelf life of the product. The medicinal contents of this formula remain unaltered for a period of 10 years. Hence, this medicine can be safely used for 10 years. However, once the seal of the container is opened, it should be used within 6 months.

Digestive problems

Punarnavasavam can be used to improve the digestive strength. It acts as a tonic for the digestive tract, especially the stomach, and helps in relieving gastric disturbances. It prevents an excessive production of acid in the stomach, which is the major contributing factor to the development of gastritis and peptic ulcers. This helps to prevent these stomach complaints and provides relief from the symptoms such as pain in the stomach, vomiting, loss of appetite, and heartburn.

Punarnavasavam also promotes the breakdown of food. It can be used to get rid of loose motions, indigestion, flatulence, and abdominal pain.

Spleen and liver disorders

Punarnavasavam is an excellent hepatic tonic. It is useful in the treatment and prevention of fatty liver disease, chronic alcoholism, jaundice, and anemia. It produces a hepatoprotective action on the liver and helps in preventing hepatomegaly, cirrhosis, ascites, and hepatitis. It helps in treating hepatitis by producing an antibacterial and antiviral action, which result in the destruction of the organisms. It reduces jaundice, loss of appetite, pain in the abdomen, nausea, vomiting, loose motions, and fever occurring due to hepatitis. It also helps to prevent the progression of cirrhosis.

This medicine has been found to be beneficial for the patients suffering from splenic disorders. It corrects the functions of this organ and helps in treating splenomegaly.

Urinary diseases

Punarnavasavam acts as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agent. It protects the kidneys against the damage caused by free radicals and toxins and also reduces inflammatory changes that lead to edema, swelling, and pain occurring due to nephritis, and renal failure.

Recommended dose of Punarnavasavam

Patients should take this medicine in dose of 12 ml, once or twice a day. In case, they suffer from severe symptoms; the dose may be increased to 24 ml, once or twice a day. The treatment can be continued for a period of 1 or 2 months. Patients should take the doses of Punarnavasavam after meals only, as it can cause stomach upsets when taken on an empty stomach. If they are using any supplements or medications, they should keep a gap of at least half an hour between the ingestion of Punarnavasavam and the other medicines.

Side effects of Punarnavasavam

Punarnavasavam is not known to cause any serious side effects. It contains only pure, natural herbal ingredients. It does not contain any chemicals. Hence, it is considered safe to use. Lactating mothers can use this medicine based on the specific indications. It is not known to produce any adverse effect on the newborn baby when used by the breastfeeding mother for a short period. However, women should avoid using it during pregnancy unless advised by a doctor. Some patients may develop mild gastric complaints like heartburn, nausea, and pain in the abdomen if this medicine is administered in a very high dose.
